Other sinus pain treatment includes steroid nasal sprays, decongestants, sometimes oral steroids, leukotriene receptor antagonist and long duration broad spectrum antibiotics.

Nasal septal deviations often cause airway obstruction and can cause pain.

Pain with sinus is synonymous. The unwanted pain and distress pain include eye pain, headaches, neck pain. Sometimes even back pain due to fatigue. Sinusitis headaches cause a dull, deep, or severe pain in the front of your head and face. They are caused by an inflammation in the passages behind the cheeks, nose, and eyes. Bending down or leaning over usually makes the pain worse, as do cold and damp weather. These are headaches that have a "butterfly" distribution where the headache is centered across the forehead between the eyes and on the mid face. A sinus headache is often bad in the morning and improves by afternoon. Many times they are confused with migraines or tension headaches. The nerve that supplies the sinusitis and nasal lining becomes irritated or inflamed, thus causing the pain. If an isolated ethmoid sinus or frontal sinus or spenoid sinus becomes obstructed or infected, it can cause pain without causing nasal congestion or drainage.

At times when there is pain in the ear or temple region then it is said to be Temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction syndrome. Treatment in such cases can be from a dentist who with simple measures or with splints and bring relief to the pain. Pseudoephedrine and Advil/Tylenol help with the symptoms of pain and congestion. The occasional use of Afrin type sprays can relieve flare ups of congestion and pain. Saline nasal sprays, or saline rinses can really ease the pain to a great extent.

Much relief from sinus pain can be achieved by using acupressure. It gives quick relief from the pain. For a person suffering from sinus pain the first treatment is usually with steroid nasal sprays and the occasional use of decongestant sprays and oral decongestants. If a person is suffering from chronic pain then surgery is suggested.

Dont try and re-invent the wheel, learn from our experience, here are 6 tips that will help you successful add medical aesthetics to your practice.

You should have a clear strategy of what services, procedures and products you will offer. Don't try to be everything to everyone. Adding medical aesthetics typically combines medical and aesthetic procedures along with complementary skin care products.

2. Start with a Road Map

A very important part of your business plan is to clearly understand what the top minimally invasive procedures are, and who is having them done.

6. Dont forget about regulatory and insurance issues

Why are more and more physicians looking at adding these cash-based aesthetic medicine procedures? One reason is fees are much higher than those for reimbursable procedures.

About the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine (IAPAM)

As you develop and grow your aesthetic practice, you are going to experience the same growing pains common to any new business, the key is identifying them and responding to them.

The nice thing about offering medical aesthetic procedures is that in most States you do not have to do the actual procedures, you can hire an experienced aesthetician, RN, PA, or NP to do them. This allows that part of your practice to generate revenue whether you are there or not.

5. Marketing and Promotion

First of all you need to let all your current patients know about your new aesthetic medicine procedures, but do not think this is enough! You will need to have a comprehensive marketing plan prior to your grand opening. You may want to offer free informational sessions on popular topics (i.e. wellness) or a special promotional treatment package.

1. Do It Because You Want To Do It

4. Building your Dream Team

Since you will be incorporating medical procedures in your practice you need to ensure you have the proper liability coverage for the procedures you will be performing. While you may already have malpractice insurance, it may not cross-over to your medical aesthetic practice. Many insurers are now requiring offices adding or expanding cosmetic-aesthetic procedures to their practice to document clinical and/or accredited training on all non-ablative modalities before a policy of coverage will be extended. Please consult your insurance provider and your legal advisor to ensure you are accurately covered.

One thing I strongly advocate is having a plan. You should have a business plan that outlines what you want to accomplish (goals), and a road map on how you are going to get there. You should have a marketing plan to clearly outline what you are going to do in order to get the best return on your investment (time).

Don't forget about ensuring each room has sufficient space to highlight the skin care line you will also carry. When choosing your skin care products, choose the ones you really believe in. Otherwise, you are missing a huge profit opportunity.

3. Product, Equipment, Service

The International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine is a voluntary association of physicians and supporters which sets standards for the aesthetic medical profession. The goal of the association is to offer education, ethical standards, credentialing, and member benefits. IAPAM membership is open to licensed medical doctors (MDs), doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs), doctors dental surgery (DDS/DMD).

Physicians need to find a way to utilize their skills to expand the scope of their practice. The growing demand for personal attention and service in medicine may provide opportunities for physicians who see the benefit of addressing these needs.

Adding medical aesthetic procedures is going to add another dimension to your practice. Adding a cash-based revenue center to your practice should yield great returns. However, if you are not doing what you truly enjoy, it will show on your bottom-line. As you will probably be spending more time and money than you originally planned, you need to make sure adding aesthetic medical procedures is what you really want to do.

Since you will not want to be tied down to the day to day operations of the medical aesthetic portion of the practice, you may consider hiring a medical aesthetics director. This person needs to have exceptional customer service values, and be talented enough to choose and develop the right team to perform your medical aesthetics procedures.

The underlying theme here is Be Prepared! The key to any business success, including expanding your practice, is having clinical expertise and to be constantly cross-marketing your available medical aesthetic treatments to your regular patient base.

Before you purchase any equipment, you should know which procedures you are going to perform in your practice. Hair removal, although popular, is very commoditized. You may want to focus on vascular and pigmented lesions, skin tightening, wrinkles and acne scars, and skin rejuvenation. It is also important that your equipment can be easily upgraded as new technologies become available, and not need to be replaced.

So just like in the example of weeds in your garden, Candida is able to come back and multiply at an alarming rate. Once the damage has been done it's almost impossible for your body to correct it without having some beneficial factors put into place such as a diet that doesn't feed the yeast. Anti-Fungals to eliminate the Candida development that has already begun and lastly Probiotics.

Chronic Sinusitis, Allergies, Asthma, Digestive problems, Brain-Fog, Mood Swings, Insomnia, Chronic Fatigue, Acne, Depression, Eczema and much more.

Your naturally occurring bacteria is completely wiped out when you take an anti-biotic, so the bad bacteria (Weeds) are killed off as well. However we all know how difficult weeds are to kill and how they simply come right back. However the good bacteria (Roses) are not. This is simply because after eliminating them the weeds took over.

Some of the major symptoms connected to Candida are:

Candida is a yeast that is naturally occurring in everyone. The thing is certain factors can occur in your life that can suppress your immune system and allow the yeast to overgrow to the point of it resembling an infections.

Feel Sick? It Could Be Candida

Do you wake up everyday and feel sick almost like you're hung-over? Do you have allergies that never quit and almost seem worse than ever? Do you feel like a cold is just lingering around and isn't going away like it should? Have you taken an anti-biotic in the past 2 years for more than 15 days?

If you answered yes! To any of the above questions then you very likely have developed Candida.

Probiotics are of the most importance because they give your body the power it needs to eliminate yeast and get it back down to size. They are your beneficial bacteria and unless you eat unsweetened yogurt on a daily basis you will need to use some of these.

The Cure is here! Never before has a natural Candida and Yeast Infection system been as effective at targeting and eliminating the root causes of both Candida and Chronic yeast infections until now.

If you've felt sick for a long time it is likely that a deeper cause beyond Candida is occurring in your body and making you feel sick all the time. I'd suggest you read below if you want to find out more on this.

While changing the gauze drip pad take care of the time after which you need to change it. If you find after sinus surgery that you need to change the pad soaked with heavy blood after every fifteen minutes, you take the matter to the notice of your surgeon.

Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese massage-type therapy based on anatomy and physiology and is a licensed medical therapy with the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Japan.

1. Take your index fingers and gently press with the pads just under the bony ridge at the inner side of your eyebrow. Press and release gently a few times.

Sinus Headache - 5 Ways to Use Shiatsu For a Sinus Headache - Nurse's Secret!

2. If you're having a frontal sinus headache, find the web between the index finger and thumb and squeeze tightly for a few one to two minutes and repeat as necessary. Use your thumb on top. Don't use this one if you're pregnant.

Shiatsu can be used to apply pressure to the energy pathways, called meridians, which can open your blocked nasal and sinus passages and help relieve the pain caused by sinus pressure, sinusitis, sinus infections or irritation of the nasal or sinus passages.

Try out these 5 therapy methods when you don't have a sinus headache if possible, to get a good feeling for them. Remember to try nasal irrigation first as your first line of defense and then work on stopping or relieving the pain and congestion. If you continue to have sinusitis and chronic sinus problems and cannot relieve the problems with Shiatsu and irrigation, and don't know the cause, then consider allergies to milk, eggs or wheat and other gluten grains. You can get rid of your sinus problems forever. Many former sufferers have done it and done it without surgery.

3. Find the Shiatsu point that is just below the cheekbone, it should be level with your pupil. Press gently upwards for a few seconds. This will also help with any eye pressure and help relieve congestion that may be contributing to your headache.

The location of your headache will be related to the sinus cavities affected. You have four sets. If you don't know which cavities are affected, then try all the shiatsu therapies below to relieve pain, pressure and/or congestion. In some cases these treatments will relieve pain and/or open sinus and nasal passages even if you don't have a headache.

Sinus headaches with their congestion, pain and the accompanying fatigue plague millions of sufferers. Often sinus headaches and migraines have similar symptoms and it may be hard to know which you have. A natural sinus treatment is always the best way to go if possible. Assuming you've already done some home remedies like saline nasal irrigation to help get rid of your headache, sinusitis or chronic sinus infection, you can try using some Shiatsu cures to see if you can stop it.

First of all you want to immediately irrigate the sinus cavities. Once you've irrigated the cavities you can try to help turn the headache around. Once a sinus headache gets a grip it takes awhile to turn it around. So if you can, start working on your sinus busters if you feel a headache is going to start or as soon as you notice a slight throb.

5. An easy method is to press your index fingers for several seconds on the outside of the nose in the crevices.

In my case, there was some improvement, but not significant enough to make me decide to continue the steroid therapy after three years of treatment. I had to balance the risks of steroids and the symptoms of myasthenia gravis.

Let me relate my own experience with steroid therapy.

Steroid medications have major effects on the metabolism of calcium and bone. Steroid therapy can result in severe bone loss, osteoporosis, and broken bones. High dosage of steroid medications can cause rapid bone loss, up to as much as 15 percent per year. If you are on steroids, you are more than twice as likely to have a spine fracture as compared to a person not taking steroids. Fracture risk increases as the daily doses of steroid medications increases. The major impact of steroid medication on bone is fractures (broken bones) that occur most commonly in the spine and ribs. There are different rates of bone loss among individuals on corticosteroids. Bone loss occurs most rapidly in the first six months after starting oral steroid medications. After 12 months of chronic steroid use, there is a slower loss of bone. However, not all patients who take steroid medications experience bone loss.

Due to myasthenia gravis, I had developed ocular symptoms, such as ptosis (drooping of eyelids) and diplopia (double vision), and weak neck and limb muscles. Fortunately, I did not have weakness of the pharynx muscles, which could cause difficulty in chewing and swallowing, as well as slurred speech in many cases of myasthenia gravis.

I was prescribed steroid medications and had been on a steroid therapy for three years. In addition, I was also given medications to deal with bone loss and other side adverse effects associated with the use of steroids.

Is steroid therapy right for you?

Copyright (c) 2008 Stephen Lau

Steroid therapy is the use of steroid medications, also known as corticosteroids, to treat many types of autoimmune disease, including myasthenia gravis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis, and other disorders, such as asthma. Steroid medications include medications like prednisone and cortisone. Corticosteroids can be prescribed to be taken orally or in other ways, such as by inhalation.

I recognized that the human body has a natural mechanism for self-healing, if given the appropriate environment. Accordingly, I took matters into my hands, and made a drastic decision to stop my steroid therapy without consulting my physician (Warning: I do not ask anyone to do the same.) I stopped the medication very slowly and gradually. Meanwhile, I did everything to improve my immune system through a thorough detoxification program, and a change of diet. I did not gain weight, my blood pressure became normal and, most important of all, my myasthenia gravis conditions did not deteriorate. Up to this day, I still have some double vision, which I have learned to cope with (I can still drive), but my other symptoms have disappeared. I have been off steroid therapy for several years already.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, once said: "No man is a better physician than himself, who knows his own constitution." No one can decide for you what is best for your health. A doctor can only give advice, but you are the one who makes the decision on whether steroid therapy is right for you.

I was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis several years ago. Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease characterized by varying degrees of weakness of the skeletal (voluntary) muscles of the body. The hallmark of the disease is muscle weakness, which increases during periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Certain muscles, such as those that control eyes and eyelid movements, facial expression, talking, chewing and swallowing are often involved in this disorder. In addition, the muscles that control breathing, neck, and limb movements may also be affected.

According to Western medicine, steroid medications are medically necessary to treat many conditions and diseases. It is important not only to follow the recommendations of your medical professional regarding steroid use, if you have decided steroid therapy is right for you, but also to explore other medical options if you have second thoughts about steroid medications.

My rude awakening came when I realized that my immune system, which was the cause of the disease in the first place, is not only an integrated network of cells that would protect me in times of an infection, but also a system with many regulatory mechanisms that, if uncontrolled, would become my enemy instead of my friend. More importantly, these steroids may control the symptoms of myasthenia gravis, but they may also impair my immune system with lasting effects on my overall health and wellness further down the road.

Other adverse side effects of steroid medications are elevation of blood pressure, weight gain, decreased resistance to infection, indigestion, thinning of skin, and potential development of cataracts and glaucoma.

When do Bazi and ZWDS come into play? They hold the key towards a comprehensive diagnosis of the health problem and medical prescription. I am a firm believer of the adage that "prevention is better than cure". Bazi and ZWDS will be able to identify the inherent health deficiency and medical problem of a person even way before the symptoms or the illness sets in. They can also help to identify the Fengshui aspects of the house or environment that the person lives in that will prevent such illnesses from setting in. An understanding of Bazi and ZWDS also holds the key to prescription of a comprehensive cure. This is because the patient may not articulate the medical problem clearly enough and an effective cure can only be achieved when the TCM practitioner understands how the energy flows within the organs and their yin & yang predisposition.

What is my basis for concluding so? Western medicine treats symptoms but do not get to the root of the problem. For someone suffering from headache they usually prescribe pain killers but falls short of addressing the real cause of the headaches. When a patient has fever, sometimes they ask the patient to dip in cold water or stay in cold air-conditioned rooms to combat the rising temperature. Proponent of Western Medicine may challenge me to say why make a fuss when the illness is "cured". I will say the symptoms may be cured but the root cause of the illness is merely subdued. The result of which is a weaker health constitution in the long term.

Opponents may still claim that I am bigoted against Western Medicine. In my next article, I will share a few examples of how Western Medicine failed or how TCM + understanding of Bazi/ZWDS cured a problem that was not satisfactorily resolved by Western Medicine.

TCM is very different as it seeks to identify the underlying health deficiencies. TCM acknowledge that the body consists of organs that are all interlinked and their yin & yang composition determines how the energy flows within the organs of the body. TCM thus goes right to the root of the health problem instead of just treating the symptoms. Rome is not built in a day, and neither should we expect our health problems to be fully cured by a TCM practitioner within a short period of time. For those that have developed to a critically late stage of illnesses, I still advocate they rely on Western Medicine as the short term cure but use TCM as the longer term fallback solution.

Western Medicine Vs Traditional Chinese Medicine

To most people, Western Medicine is scientific, more widely accepted and belongs to the main stream tools toward health and wellness. Hence, it is the defacto choice for them. While I have utmost respect for the advancement Western Medicine have made until today, I have come across enough cases that makes me convinced that TCM is the superior choice to Western Medicine when it comes to achieving good health. I will say TCM is more effective at keeping people in the pink of health while Western Medicine is better in treating sick people. When people are severely ill, naturally Western Medicine is the better choice of treatment.

Chronic Sinus Infection Treatment - Ways of Treating Chronic Sinus Infection

Inflammation of the sinus is known as sinus infection. But what is sinus? It is the cavities located in the nose. Sinus helps in pushing out the dry and mucous that is present inside the body. Therefore, when inflammation occurs in the sinus the dry and mucous is blocked inside the sinus. This, in medical parlance, is known as sinusitis. Those affected with sinusitis suffer from severe headaches. However, there is a vast difference between common cold and sinusitis. You should consult a doctor who will diagnose the ailment and prescribe medicines for you.

Chronic sinus infection treatment, which lasts about three to eight weeks, is bound to cause the patients with terrible pain and discomfort. For chronic sinus infection treatment patients must consult doctors as soon as possible to avoid severe pain. Also ensure that your doctor analysis your symptoms in detail, the cause for the infection and nature of cure that is most appropriate for you.

Other chronic sinus infection treatment:

Chronic sinus:

Those with chronic sinus suffer for about three to eight weeks more or less. What is chronic sinus infection treatment then, one may ask. But before going into the details of chronic sinus it is pertinent to know about the symptoms. Generally, the symptoms for chronic sinus are unbearable headaches, trouble in breathing and tiredness, fever, painful jaws and yellow discharge from the nose.

Patients could be prescribed by the doctors to use decongestants so that it could reduce the clogging of the nasal membrane. It is also recommended that inhaling steam through a vaporizer could bring in the much needed relief. Drinking warm fluids will also help a lot.

Sometimes chronic sinus infection treatment could also involve treatment for allergy if the infection is due to allergy. Both the treatments are done simultaneously.

Drug Overdose Deaths on the Rise

  • Sinus infection or sinusitis (caused by pressure in the nasal passages.)
  • Migraines
  • Hormone changes such as those that occur in the premenstrual phase
  • Tension headaches (caused by stress and the type of sore head that most closely resembles the one caused by high BP.)
  • Cluster headaches (come in groups and last a half an hour to several hours and occur more than once a day for a prolonged period of time.)
  • Dental problems (a referred pain pattern of head discomfort associated with a toothache.)
  • Eye problems (is caused by an infection or problem with the eye such as glaucoma)

Those listed above are the commonest cause of head pain but of course there are many other possibilities too - if you have persistent headache then please go see your doctor for a check over. You should not rely on internet information for diagnosis of health problems. When you look at the scientific journals there is no convincing research to prove that high BP causes pains in the head - although from looking after many thousands of hypertensive patients, I know for certain that it does. This makes it even more confusing of course. Hypertension is known as the silent killer because of its lack of any symptoms that can be directly attached to the problem. All of the high BP symptoms can also be associated with any number of other conditions. The only way to diagnose hypertension is by monitoring the BP level. Hypertension headaches usually only occur when the patients BP is at a very high level - or when there has been a sudden surge in the level and in this context it can be a warning feature of the need for urgent treatment. You need to keep in mind that up to ninety percent of all headaches are stress induced or stress related and aggravated. Learning to relax can be very beneficial for your BP level as well as for any other stress related symptoms you are experiencing.

Blood pressure headache can certainly be a problem but don't forget that many patients with hypertension have no symptoms of any kind. A sore head does not always mean that you must have high blood pressure!

Diamaxol has the same ingredients as Diabeticine, and it claims to be all-natural. A partial list of the ingredients, according to the manufacturer includes Bitter Melon, Licorice extract, Cinnamon herb powder, Yarrow, Cayenne, Juniper Berries, Huckleberry, and Vanadyl Sulfate.

Diamaxol is licensed as a supplement by the FDA. As such, it cannot claim to cure diseases. Diamaxol still claims to lower blood sugar, just like Diabeticine. Diamaxol has a 30 day 50 point lower guarantee, as well as a long term one year claim.

Diabeticine, however, claimed to target the root of diabetes. Diabeticine claimed that it was a hypoglycemic agent. The FDA looked at Diabeticines advertising campaign and declared that it was a drug, not a supplement. This seems to be fair reasoning on the part of the FDA. (The name, Diabeticine, also implies that it is a medicine).

The bottom line is that the helpful effects of Diamaxol are as yet unproven. Though the manufacturer claims to have clinical proof, many sceptics dismiss this as marketing. Because the FDA has approved Diamaxol as a supplement, at least we know that it cant hurt. If you have tried all of your other options, consider this one, but only after talking with your health care team.

Diabeticine and Diamaxol: New Diabetes Medicine and the FDA

There appears to be mixed feelings about Diabeticine (now Diamaxol). Some people praise it for lowering their blood sugar, without them having to change their diet or exercise. Others claim that taking a pill is not the solution to managing diabetes and that lifestyle changes are the only truly healthy way to maintain the sought blood sugar levels. Those who laud the drug sometimes claim that they have tried diet, exercise, and even other diabetes medicines, but that they were not effective.

Medical Education As a Career in India - A Goldmine of Opportunity

So, there you have it! Being a doctor in India is what is needed. All macroeconomic numbers are on your side.

Trends and industry facts:

* Today, the Indian healthcare industry is estimated at $35 billion and is slated to grow to $75 billion by 2013.

* To meet the burgeoning demand for healthcare professionals in the country, India is likely to need at least seven million more.

* This is way ahead of retail which stands at 2 million and IT enabled services at 5 million.

* On the other hand, medical professionals will need to serve the medical needs of 1.2 billion by 2015.

* 180 recognized medical colleges in India produce close to 27,000 graduates every year. Approximately, 24,000 doctors are registered with the Medical Council of India (MCI) into the practice every year. This, as is evident, is acutely short of the requirement. (MCI annual report 2006-2007)

* Even by a conservative estimate, India lags behind 0.2 million doctors and 0.5 million nurses currently. This does not even include paramedical and administrative personnel.

* In spite of the need for doctors and the expected growth of this industry, India severely lacks well-equipped training facilities even today.

* Lack of mandated standardization and regulation in the profession has resulted in over 90 per cent of healthcare being serviced by the unorganized sector.

* State wise, there is a big gap in the country between healthcare workers and population. In Uttar Pradesh, the number of doctors per lac population is 23 and the number of nurses per lac population is 9.24. As against this, in Kerala, the number of doctors per lac population is 56.72 and the number of nurses per lac population is 78.41.

Medical Sciences refers to the science of the preservation of health as well as the prevention and treatment of disease. Derived from the Latin ars medicina, "the art of healing Medicine", it is a stream related to health sciences and public life. It is mainly concerned with maintaining or restoring human health through the study, diagnosis, treatment and possible prevention of disease. From time immemorial, this field has been viewed as a prestigious profession. This is one arena where the possibility of research and innovations are never ending. Therefore, it is one of the few professional streams where there is no fear of stagnation.

Arthroscopic techniques may be beneficial in special circumstances. Occasionally, a surgical procedure called an osteotomy, where a wedge of bone is removed from the tibia to even things out, may be recommended. Joint replacement surgery is required for end stage knee arthritis.

Other therapies include ice, anti inflammatory medicines, and occasionally steroid injections.
Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements may be helpful. A word of caution... make sure the preparation you buy is pure and contains what the label says it does. The supplement industry is unregulated... so buyer beware!

Bursae are small fluid filled sacs that decrease the friction between two tissues. Bursae also protect bony structures. There are many different bursae around the knee but the ones that are most important are the prepatellar bursa in front of the knee cap, the infrapatellar bursa just below the kneecap, the anserine bursa, just below the joint line and to the inner side of the tibia, and the semimembranous bursa in the back of the knee. Normally, a bursa has very little fluid in it but if it becomes irritated it can fill with fluid and become very large.

Strengthening exercises for the knee are also useful for many people. These should be done under the supervision of a physician or physical therapist.

Tendonitis generally affects either the quadriceps tendon or patellar tendon. Repetitive jumping or trauma may set off tendonitis. The pain is felt in the front of the knee and there is tenderness as well as swelling involving the tendon. With patellar tendonitis, the infrapatellar bursa will often be inflamed also. Treatment involves rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medication. Injections are rarely used. Physical therapy with ultrasound and iontopheresis may help.

Ligaments are the strong rope-like structures that help connect bones and provide stability. In the knee, there are four major ligaments. On the inner (medial) aspect of the knee is the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and on the outer (lateral) aspect of the knee is the lateral collateral ligament (LCL). The other two main ligaments are found in the center of the knee. These ligaments are called the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). They are called cruciate ligaments because the ACL crosses in front of the PCL. Other smaller ligaments help hold the patella in place in the center of the femoral groove.

Tendons connect muscles to bone. The large quadriceps muscles on the front of the thigh attach to the top of the patella via the quadriceps tendon. This tendon inserts on the patella and then continues down to form the rope-like patellar tendon. The patellar tendon in turn, attaches to the front of the tibia. The hamstring muscles on the back of the thigh attach to the tibia at the back of the knee. The quadriceps muscles are the muscles that straighten the knee. The hamstring muscles are the main muscles that bend the knee.

When your knee hurts, getting relief is all thats on your mind. Getting the right relief, though, depends on knowing whats wrong. The correct diagnosis will lead to the correct treatment.

Newer compounds that are injected into the knee and provide healing as well as lubrication are also being developed. And finally, less invasive surgical techniques are also being looked at. Recent technological advances in mini knee replacement look very promising.

Two structures called menisci sit between the femur and the tibia. These structures act as cushions or shock absorbers. They also help provide stability for the knee. The menisci are made of a tough material called fibrocartilage. There is a medial meniscus and a lateral meniscus. When either meniscus is damaged it is called a "torn cartilage".

There is another type of cartilage in the knee called hyaline cartilage. This cartilage is a smooth shiny material that covers the bones in the knee joint. In the knee, hyaline cartilage covers the ends of the femur, the femoral groove, the top of the tibia and the underside of the patella. Hyaline cartilage allows the knee bones to move easily as the knee bends and straightens.

Knock out knee arthritis... simple steps you can take!
Younger people who have pain in the front of the knee have what is called patellofemoral syndrome (PFS). Two major conditions cause PFS. The first is chondromalacia patella. This is a condition where the cartilage on the underside of the knee cap softens and is particularly common in young women. Another cause of pain behind the knee cap in younger people may be a patella that doesnt track normally in the femoral groove. For both chondromalacia as well as a poorly tracking patella, special exercises, taping, and anti-inflammatory medicines may be helpful. If the patellar tracking becomes a significant problem despite conservative measures, surgery is need.

Bursitis pain is common. The prepatellar bursa may become inflamed particularly in patients who spend a lot of time on their knees (carpet layers). The bursa will become swollen. The major concern here is to make sure the bursa is not infected. The bursa should be aspirated (fluid withdrawn by needle) by a specialist. The fluid should be cultured. If there is no infection, the bursitis may be treated with anti-jnflammatory medicines, ice, and physical therapy. Knee pads should be worn to prevent a recurrence once the initial bursitis is cleared up.

"Ooohhh... My Aching Knee!!!" Insider Secrets on How You Can Get Relief Quickly and Easily!

Anserine bursitis often occurs in overweight people who also have osteoarthritis of the knee. Pain and some swelling is noted in the anserine bursa. Treatment consists of steroid injection, ice, physical therapy, and weight loss.

So how is the arthritis treated? An obvious place to start is weight reduction for patients who carry around too many pounds.

Patients will sometimes feel a sensation of rubbing or grinding. The knee will become stiff if the patient sits for any length of time. With local inflammation, the patient may experience pain at night and get relief from sleeping with a pillow between the knees. Occasionally, locking and clicking may be noticed. Patients with osteoarthritis may also tear the fibrocartilage cushions (menisci) in the knee more easily than people without osteoarthritis.

Is it bursitis... or tendonitis...or arthritis?

The semimembranous bursa can be affected when a patient has fluid in the knee (a knee effusion). The fluid will push backwards and the bursa will become filled with fluid and cause a sensation of fullness and tightness in the back of the knee. This is called a Bakers cyst. If the bursa ruptures, the fluid will dissect down into the calf. The danger here is that it may look like a blood clot in the calf. A venogram and ultrasound test will help differentiate a ruptured Bakers cyst from a blood clot. The Bakers cyst is treated with aspiration of the fluid from the knee along with steroid injection, ice, and elevation of the leg.

Research is being done to develop medicines that will slow down the rate of cartilage loss. Targets for these new therapies include the destructive enzymes and/or cytokines that degrade cartilage. It is hoped that by inhibiting these enzymes and cytokines and by boosting the ability of cartilage to repair itself, that therapies designed to actually reverse osteoarthritis may be created. These are referred to as disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs or DMOADs. Genetic markers may identify high risk patients who need more aggressive therapies.

The knee is the largest joint in the body. Its also one of the most complicated. The knee joint is made up of four bones that are connected by muscles, ligaments, and tendons. The femur (large thigh bone) interacts with the two shin bones, the tibia (the larger one) located towards the inside and the fibula (the smaller one) located towards the outside. Where the femur meets the tibia is termed the joint line. The patella, (the knee cap) is the bone that sits in the front of the knee. It slides up and down in a groove in the lower part of the femur (the femoral groove) as the knee bends and straightens.

Injections of the knee with viscosupplements lubricants- are particularly useful for many patients. Special braces may help to unload the part of the joint that is affected.

While many types of arthritis may affect the knee, osteoarthritis is the most common. Osteoarthritis usually affects the joint between the femur and tibia in the medial (inner) compartment of the knee. Osteoarthritis may also involve the joint between the femur and tibia on the outer side of the knee as well as the joint between the femur and patella. Why osteoarthritis develops is still being scrutinized carefully. It seems to consist of a complex interaction of genetics, mechanical factors, and immune system involvement. The immune system attacks the joint through a combination of degradative enzymes and inflammatory chemical messengers called cytokines.

Experimental Psoriasis Drug Takes on Enbrel

The least invasive procedure is the electrotherapy and laser therapy, both aimed at cauterizing the hemorrhoid with high voltage lights and energy, causing it to shrink down to a manageable size. Sclerotherapy is an injection that causes strengthening of the walls to help prevent occurrences in the future. Cryosurgery is a process of freezing the hemorrhoid, but is rarely used due to the side effects. Invasive approaches include a Baron, or rubber band ligation which cuts off the blood supply and it is then sloughed off during normal bowel movements.

External hemorrhoids treatment is something millions of middle-aged individuals have to deal with, and fortunately there are many options to choose from. However, the information and choices around these treatments can be overwhelming, and sometimes hard to understand.

Hemorrhoids, also commonly referred to as emerods or piles, is a condition that affects up to 85 percent of the elderly population at any given time. It is a condition characterized by swelling, itching and painful irritation to the veins in the anal and rectal areas. They can be both internal and external, though the majority of the people that get them, have the external variety.

Medically, the treatment for external hemorrhoids ranges from topical to very invasive. The most common method is using a topical medicated cream like Anasol or Preparation H. This causes the hemorrhoids to shrink down, and often is the only application needed. When medical attention is imperative, there is a variety of protocols that can be used.

Those with hemorrhoids can use a natural supplement called bromelain and it is a natural inflammatory found in pineapple, but is also available in pill form. This helps to reduce swelling and inflammation without the use of topical medications. In some cases, drinking 99 percent pure aloe juice has had similar effects, along with putting aloe vera on the affected area. If the hemorrhoids are particularly painful, one can use witch hazel or honey topically, generously applying it directly to the affected area.

There are many causes, and some people are more likely to get them than others. Genetic predisposition to hemorrhoids is thought to be one of the reasons that make people more susceptible to getting them. They can also be caused by straining during bowel movements, pressure on the rectal veins due to poor muscle tone and poor posture. Obesity and sedentary cause undue stress on the rectal veins, as well as does frequent constipation. Many women experience hemorrhoids during pregnancy and following childbirth, as there is a lot of pressure put upon the muscles, especially during the pushing stage of childbirth.

Effective External Hemorrhoids Treatment Often Requires Both Conventional And Alternative Therapies

It may seem daunting at first, as there are a variety of ways to approach them, both natural and conventional. Finding the best treatment for hemorrhoids is accomplished by the patients educating themselves on the various options, and making a decision about what works for them.

Those who have persistent hemorrhoids can undergo a surgical procedure known as a hemorrhoidectomy, which requires an incision and surgical removal of the hemorrhoid. Many people prefer natural methods because surgery for removal can often be more painful and cause a longer recover period than using natural or non-invasive methods.

External hemorrhoids treatment also comes in the form of natural and non-invasive methods, and is known to be as effective as medical treatments in most cases. The most common alternative method is using herbs such as Japanese pagoda tree extracts, butcher's broom, and horse chestnut, nicely complimented with dietary supplements that strengthen vein walls. These two items help to naturally remove and prevent hemorrhoids in the future. A diet full of fiber-rich foods such as plantains, Psyllium seed husks and chamomile tea act as a natural regulator, keeping bowel movements soft and easy.

Listed below will be a list of the various types of programs you may encounter on your search for a drug rehab, alcoholism or addiction treatment program:

There are thousands of drug rehab or drug treatment programs available throughout the United States. They term themselves drug rehab, drug treatment, addiction treatment facility, free standing addiction treatment, detox and a host of other names. I wanted to take a moment and explain the differences to you.

Drug Rehab Programs: Variety and Effectiveness

  • Drug Rehab (free standing facility ) this is a stand alone facility, specializing in the treatment of drug addiction or alcoholism. It is not part of a general hospital.
  • Drug Addiction (free standing facility) same as above
  • Alcoholism Treatment (free standing facility) same as above
  • Drug Rehab (hospital based) this is a program that is usually located on a private wing within a general hospital. The addict or alcoholic who has developed complicated medical or psychiatric problems might be better off detoxing within the confines of a hospital. Allow an addiction specialist or physician to make that decision for you.
  • Addiction Treatment (hospital based) same as above
  • Alcoholism Treatment (hospital based) same as above
  • Detox Program (hospital based or free standing) is a level of care in which a person is medically monitored in an effort to assist them with the withdrawal symptoms associated with drug addiction or alcoholism. The greater the medical needs of an individual, the better the chances of their need for a hospital based detox.
  • Long Term Residential Addiction Treatment Programs are generally free standing facilities, designed for the addict or alcoholic whose recovery needs warrant a longer period of time than a typical 30 day addiction treatment program can provide.

At least there was not such a system until this week. This week www.theoriginalmymedicalrecords.com announced the prototype release of Version 1.2, a portable medical record with change tracking, high-level encryption and password protection.

None of these systems however have one basic piece that is required for credibility in the medical world. It is called change tracking and it is the ability for the healthcare professional reading the portable medical record to look at what changes have been made in the portable medical record and what existed in the record before the change was made. Change tracking is an internal audit of the system and ensures that there has been no tampering that could threaten a patient's life.

It is amazing how once you notice something, you begin to pay attention and in paying attention you discover a whole new world.

For those of you who are not familiar with portable medical records allow me a moment to give some definitions. A portable medical record is a USB drive device such as a Thumb Drive, a USB wristband, a USB flash drive wristwatch, pendant, or other portable mass storage that can be worn on the body attached to a belt or keys and holds basic medical information in a database form. Almost all these devices now are password protected and offer varying levels of functionality.

But I envision a larger market. I envision a day when rather than receiving a flimsy paper wristband at the hospital or nursing home a patient has a portable medical record in a waterproof band around their wrist. When the nurse comes by with their wireless Tablet computer to chart she simply plugs the patient record band in and the records are immediately synchronized. The patient goes nowhere without their chart on their wrist.

Yes, they all have some form of password protection and an emergency screen where basic information can be seen without the use of the password. They hold information such as living wills, organ donor cards, healthcare surrogate contracts, past medical histories, allergies, medications and a few hold greater levels of data. Two of them integrate with online personal health records but only one can import and export to electronic medical records.

With that in mind let's turn now back to the portable medical records. This is a market that is exploding. A few short weeks ago I wrote an article, my second in this arena, that described nine products of this type. Two days ago I did a new Google search on this topic (okay, I was desperate for an article topic) and I found no fewer than 24 companies now offering these devices in the United States, Canada and England. Many of these devices are now being made in Taiwan and China and installed directly on the flash drives. They are coming in every shape, size and form but unfortunately with little or no functionality.

As the water resistant or splash resistant USB devices these units are already finding a home on the wrists of scuba divers, sky divers, mountain bikers and others who enjoy high fun/ high risk sports.

A personal health record is the online equivalent of the portable medical record. This software exists on the Internet with storage maintained at a third-party site. The information is again password protected and in an emergency can be accessed by the healthcare provider with an Internet connection and that password.

I envision a day when my disaster medical assistance team (MDMS/DMAT-FL3) provides care in a Katrina like event after a natural disaster with subsequent flooding and places a USB flash drive wristband around the wrist of every evacuee. Information on federal assistance, registration for finding lost family members, their own personal information as well as a health record will travel with them from the moment of rescue until their final destination. If they already had a personal medical record on their wrist or in their pocket or around their neck as an independent we in the MDMS/DMAT-FL3 would be able to plug their device into our computers and upload the important information to help them recover their lives and help us treat their injuries.

Where will this new medical device find a home?

An electronic medical record is a software package utilized by hospital healthcare facility physicians that replaces the paper patient chart. This is an official document and subject to significant government regulation. By 2008 every healthcare provider in the United States must be executing concrete plans to transition from paper to electronic records and by 2014 all paper must be gone.

The Race to a Paperless Society

This is truly something new and represents a second generation of portable medical record.

This second generation of flash drive device holds tremendous promise not only for the transfer of information but even the prevention of medical errors by ensuring that the most basic information is in the hands of those who are making the most important decisions.

In the event of an emergency the patient's band is on their wrist and it does not matter what emergency room they go into, what EMS service picks them up all the important information is at the fingertips of those there to save their life.

Several weeks ago I wrote an article on portable medical records and the possible uses of technology to bring part of the medical records from novelty status to a mainstream medical device. A few weeks later I was introduced to a new generation of portable medical records that were capable of synchronizing with the electronic medical records at a physician's office or at a hospital.

Immune System Biomarkers May Predict Early Lung Cancer

Saline, for example, is a suitable alternative for maintaining patency of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) catheters and can be used to flush two-way valve catheters. The blood thinner pharmaceutical Warfarin, a synthetic derivative of coumarin, is an oral anticoagulant often used to prevent thromboembolic disorders. However, Warfarin probably is not suitable as a heparin substitute.

Alternatives Not Always Available
Hospital administrators and medical device manufacturers are left searching for alternative sources for "clean" heparin or adequate substitutes. Offshore sources are unlikely to fill the need as Japanese and German companies also have recalled heparin containing active ingredients from China. For the time being, the FDA recommends using another product when possible or to use very low doses of heparin and closely monitor the patient for adverse effects.

One of heparin's primary manufacturers, Baxter International, had begun monitoring reports of adverse reactions in December, and stopped producing multiple-dose heparin vials on Feb. 11 after four deaths were reported. To date, over 800 cases of adverse effects have been reported, including 21 deaths. A large-scale recall of the product was not ordered, as the FDA feared problems associated with a sudden shortage. Baxter supplies approximately half of the heparin used in the U.S.

Problems Thought to Originate in China
Changzhou Scientific Protein Laboratories supplied the ingredients for injectable heparin that Baxter manufactured. The FDA believes the Chinese-made ingredients are at fault, and the manufacturing facility thought to be at fault was not routinely inspected. The facility's name resembles that of another manufacturing facility that was inspected regularly. Equally significant, a substance that mimics heparin was used rather than the correct active ingredient, whether accidentally or purposely has not yet been determined.

Of the new anticoagulants currently in clinical development, Hirudin, a protein cloned from a leech, inhibits thrombin, and Danaparoid (Orgaran), which is structured like heparin and requires less monitoring than heparin, are in the final stages of approval for use. But those are not yet available to meet the present crisis.

This heparin issue brings to light critical quality issues in imported medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutical manufacturers increasingly rely on offshore manufacturers for critical ingredients. For example, China currently supplies more pharmaceutical ingredients than any other country in the world. Companies must take care that alternative supplies are readily available to support a substantial global medical need.

Heparin Alternatives Scarce - It's Difficult to Replace Something Taken For Granted Over 70 Years

A thought-provoking issue is how prepared pharmaceutical companies must be to find substitutes quickly when reliable substances or their ingredients suddenly become less than reliable. Consumer trust in the quality the drugs they are given or the medical devices they use is critical to the health care system.

Heparin Widely Used in Diverse Settings
Heparin, which is produced naturally by the liver and lungs and can be synthesized in a laboratory setting, is injected in hospital settings when there is a danger of clot formation. The substance is also used for dialysis so that clots do not form in the hemodialysis lines or dialyzer. Other medical devices such as cardiac catheters, recommend heparin to flush the devices to reduce clot formation within the device's lumen. Clots forming in these devices could be deadly if they disengage from the catheter wall and enter the patient's circulatory system.

Introduced into clinical use over 70 years ago, heparin is the most commonly used anticoagulant today. In all that time there were no quality or supply issues, and as a result it was not especially critical to find a viable alternative. Of the currently available alternatives, only a couple can be considered, but none compare to heparin.

Gabapentin (also known by the brand name Neurontin) is a prescription drug originally approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1994 to help people suffering from epilepsy to better handle mild seizures. Since that time, it has been commonly used to treat neuropathic pain. This type of pain mainly effects the nervous system. It has also been used to a limited degree to treat bipolar disorder, migraine prevention, and some severe forms of medication-resistant depression. But with the various uses for treatment, one needs to ask the question: what are the side effects of gabapentin?

One common side effect of gabapentin of dizziness. This tends to occur in the beginning of treatment, but usually lessens as your body becomes more accustomed to the medication. Another typical complaint of Neurontin users is extreme drowsiness. Until you are aware of just how drowsy the prescription will be, its best to avoid operating motor vehicles and heavy machinery.

If you suffer from some form of neuropathic pain and would like to explore this treatment further, it is highly recommended that you talk to your physician and learn more details on what the side effect of gabapentin (Neurontin) are. Living with pain can be a miserable experience. For many individuals, gabapentin has offered them some much needed relief.

This article can be reprinted by newsletter/ezine owners and webmasters as long as the links are kept active and none of the content is altered.

Another side effect commonly reported by Neurontin users is peripheral edema. This is an uncomfortable condition where the hands and feet become swollen. If this becomes painful, or doesn't go away after a few weeks of starting the gabapentin treatment, a doctor should be seen immediately.

What Are the Side Effects of Gabapentin
